On tltc morning of the 17's 1 again vtsiled dtt site to collect water sample for Wet testing Uta[ was
iu progress. At dust time S noted in my field notes that (low Crow the discharge point was somewhat lower
[Iran nonnal. Anticipating that there might be art electrical problem tvitlt the pump I also noted dte
amperage meter reading. 1 retunted [o the office and notified our electrical department of my obxrvations
and asked Wan to investigate.
Rick Mills accompanied the back to Outfall 001 to continue our own investigation. We soon discovered
water running out the top of We SouW Pump manhole into a containment area and seepage Gom under We
toe of the containment area's embankment that could find its way to Fish Creek. We immediately shut off
the pump, thereby stopping additional flow (1:15 p.ttt.) to the containment area. We also collected a sample
of the untreated water in the containment and sent it io the lab for analysis.
The source of We upxt condition was found to be a failed compression tilting in the influent line Causing a
leak, which was repaired. S have calculated that flow from the leak was at a maximum rate of approzima[ely
150 g.p.tn. at [trot time. The leak to the tnanltolc and Wen to Ute containment occurred for no more dtan a
twenty hour period, though 1 have no way of determining au average Flow during We actual time. The water
did not ever overflow the embankment, but eeepage from uudcr the toe of We embankment was observed at
several locations. Very little erosion occurred during tltc event, and the embankment around the site
retained the water for a period of time.
Analysis of the water simples wi1V be forwarded to you, as they become available If you rcquirc additional
information play wll me a (970) 870-2730.
\^T\wcutytnilc Coal Compan'y' 4
ace Shoemaker
Cnvtronmcuml Specialist
p.2
Cc' DMG
CWPS Pcnnit No. CO-0042161
