• SENECA COAL COMPANY
MOISTURE-DENSITY TESTING FOR SENECA COAL COMPANY
June 19, 2001
Four representative material samples (Sandy Clay, Very Sandy Clay, Silty Sand, and Sandstone) were
collected and standazd Proctor tests (ASTM D698) were conducted in 1999 to assist in the QA/QC
procedures to assure that the placement of fill meets the design and engineering compaction
specifications for the approved designs in the PAP. Seneca and Montgomery Watson personnel
collected the samples and I~iorthwest Colorado Consultants conducted the testing. These tests
resulted in maximum dry densities ranging from 103 pcf (sandstone) to 111.4 pcf (very sandy clay).
The mote conservative density of 111 pcf was selected as the target level for density testing during the
construction of all haul roads and pond embankments in the II-W and Yoast Mine azeas. The results
of the Proctor tests aze included in Attachment A, Moirturt-Dewily Relntianrhip.
Seneca II-W Mine
Haul Road I
Seneca completed Haul Road I construction in 2000. Montgomery Watson personnel conducted
density testing on June 19, 2001 at five (5) locations as shown on the attached drawing. A summary
of the field density testing results aze presented in Appendix B, Freld Tctt Reru!!t. All test results were
above the required 90% of the maximum dry density value of 111 pcf.
•
•
/:\.'U0J08 S.um\Fi./d Tunn;\Hov/Hmd I T.nl d Svwnoy Ow
