• Fig. B-1. This replacement of coarse particles to create a test sample was also
performed for the samples used in the permeability testing.
Moisture-density compaction testing (ASTM D 698, AASHTO T 99) was
performed on bulk samples with She + 314 inch particles excluded. The results of
specific gravity testing and a method to mathematically correct for the larger sized
pieces (ASTM D 4718) were used to estimate maximum dry densRies and optimum
moisture contents as shown on Table B-1. Relative density tests were performed on
samples which excluded the + 3/4 inch and were not corrected for larger particles.
REFUSE DISPOSAL AREA CONDf11ONS
Surface Conditions
• The RDA is planned in a comparatively flat area along the west side of a
shallow valley as shown on Figs. 1 and 2. Existing grades below and to the west of
the revised RDA are typically in the range of 6 or 8:1 (horizontal to vertical (H:V]).
The valley centerline slopes toward Sedimentation Pond D at an average slope of
about 15:1 (H:~. We do not believe previous surface mining extended west of the
valley flowline. The ground surface is covered with grass. No signs of seeps or
springs in this area have been observed by representatives of our firm or Twentymile
Coal Company personnel.
Soil and Groundwater Conditions
Several borings and test pits from the previous investigation were located

within or near the revised RDA, including TH-3, TP-3A, TP-3B, TH-4, TH-5, TP-5, TH-6
• and TP-10 as shown on Fig 2.
