Lochhead
ftecutive Director
btichael B. Long
Divi>ion Director
On 12/30/97, DMG contacted Jim Green, Colorado Historical Society (303) 866-3682 to
verify that Colorado Historical Society had received DMG 10/2/97 notice of Stone Gravel
Pit application. DMG staff informed Mr. Green that DMG had not received response from
Colorado Historical Society. However, DMG had received numerous objections from local
parities, to the application, indicating potential conflict with archaeological issues.
Mr. Green responded that Historica! Society had received DMG notice. Upon receipt of
DMG notice, Historical Society had contacted BLM archaeologist, Christy Arrington. Mr.
Green indicated that Historical Society and BLM were working cooperativately on the
archaeological issues and had identified one site within the proposed permit area as a
"need data site" to determine the significance of the site. Mr. Green did not indicate that
the site had been nominated or registered as an historic site. Mr. Green identified the
archaeological site as 5MT2020. Mr. Green also indicated that since the site was located
on federal land, BLM had jurisdiction over archaeological issues.
Mr. Green indicated that the agreement between the BLM and applicant, whereby BLM
construct a fence surrounding the archaeological study site, 5MT2020, and applicant
agrees to not conduct mining operations within the fenced site without BLM approval, was
acceptable to Colorado Historical Society.
