• Lastly, neither of the drainages within the study area exhibits geomorphic activity.
There is no evidence of significant variable flow in the hydrologic condition. There is
no evidence of scour or deposition in the channel. Channels are well vegetated with
old and established vegetation, indicating long periods of stable growth conditions.
The lack of cottonwood seedlings and saplings is further indication of the lack of
geomorphic activity, since this species is dependent on flooding, erosion and deposition
for reseeding.
CONCLUSION AND SUMMARY
This investigator deduces that a riparian community probably existed historically in
these drainages, but was eliminated by the isolation of theses drainages by significant
linear construction to the south (railroad, highway, and airport facilities). Construction
of significant linear facilities which transected the upstream flows of these drainages
effectively removed the forces which established and maintained the riparian areas and
communities. At this temporal point, riparian communities, as defined and conceived,
are not present in this location.
Based on a field investigation of Spring Creek and the unnamed drainage traversing the
Carol Ann Pit site, and analysis of the definitions of riparian researchers and regulatory
agencies, it was concluded that Spring Creek and the unnamed drainage are not riparian
• areas.
•
-7-
