Mule Creek Gravel Pit ~ironmental Assessment • Page 34
' • Species is declining in number or occurrences, and evidence indicates that it could be
proposed for federal listing as Threatened or Endangered if actions aze not taken to
' reverse or stop the downward trend.
• If the species habitat is declining, continued loss could result in population declines
' that lead to federal listing as threatened or endangered if actions are not taken to
reverse or stop the downwazd trend.
' • The species population or habitat is stable but limited.
' Additional status codes are Category 1 (C1) and Category 2 (C2). These codes are used
' by the USFWS to define Candidate species. Cl aze taxa for which the USFWS has
substantial information on hand to support the biological appropriateness of proposing to
list the species as Endangered or Threatened. C2 aze taxa for which information now in
' possession of the USFWS indicates that proposing to list the species as Endangered or
Threatened is possibly appropriate, but for which conclusive data on biological
vulnerability and threats aze not currently available to support proposed rules.
f
h
d
i
l
d
h
t
e propose
project
nc
u
e t
e
Sensitive species that may occur in the vicinity o
following birds:
I' Birds Federal Status
Northern Goshawk (Accippter Gentilis) Sensitive-C2
' Boreal Owl (Rego/ius Funereus) Sensitive
Great Blue Heron (Ardes herodias) Sensitive
'
An additional species of concern that occurs in Teller County was documented in the
referred biologic evaluation. The Northern leopard frog, listed by the State of Colorado
' as a Species of Special Concern. This species inhabits the banks and shallow portions of
wetlands, ponds, and other permanent bodies of water, and breeds in shallow, non-
' flowing portions of permanent water bodies and in seasonally flooded azeas. The wetland
azea in the proposed project site constitutes an ephemeral drainage, thus providing poor
habitat for leopard frogs.
'
3.1.3 Human Environment
3.1.3.1 Cultural Resources
A cultural resources inventory of the proposed project's site was conducted by Powers
' Elevation Co., Inc. (Power) in September 1998, in compliance with the USDA Forest
Service requirements regazding Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act.
Previous work on the cultural history of the Colorado Mountains indicated the potential
for the existence of isolated prehistoric artifacts and ceramics in the proposed site.
Historic remains have been associated with various socioeconomic circumstances,
' including the exploration of new territories, the fur trade, the gold rush and other mining
' Hydrosphere Resource Consulunts, 1002 Walnut Suite 200, Boulder, CO 80302
