RF.COMyENDAT.InNS
The primary purpose of the Geot.ec•hnical
Stud L• was t.o determine the probable cause of the vertical r.racrk-
inq observed in t.}~e embankment by personnel of Western Fuels.
TFre actual vertical cracking could not be observed by personnel
of Lincoln DeVore as the crack had been filled prior to our
arrival on site. It is not Icnown if this crack was principally
wider ect. the top than at the bottom and exactly how deep the
cracl: was in the embankment. The initial laboratory testing
concentrated on the embankment construction and materials but.,
doe to a lack of definitive answers, samples taken in ttte lower
pot•t.ions of the embankment/alluvial soils and t}:e underlying
weathered claystones were carefully tested for characteristics
whii•h could either cause or contribute to the observed cracking
cf the embankment.
It was initially asst:med the sails in
ttre embankmen~ had either .:racked due to soil shrinkage upon,
desiccation or that possibly some differential displacement of
the embankment had occurred. The embankment soils were found to
have quite low s
}:avr- been placed
which may allow
construction and
embankment, the
hri.nk/swell characteristics and did not appear to
at sufficiently high density throughout the fill
for clay swelling dt:t•ir:g and immediutely after
subsequent shrinkage upon later desiccation.
*lo soil characteristics in either the
lower embankment/alluvial soil section or the
~.::,derlying native soils w•as encountered during sampling or st:hse-
~::ent laboratory testing which wot:ld indicate that significant
8
