Vr``".D ~ `tom f~,P
Soil Conservation Service
Colorado
August 1971
Guide for Identifying Grazable Woodland
MLRA's 34, 35, 47, 48, 49, 51 69
Technical Cuide
Section II-F
Woodland
Grazable woodland is forest land on which the understory includes, as an
integral part of the forest plant community, plants which can be grazed
without significantly impairing other forest values.
In Colorado, grazable woodlands consist of certain pinyon-juniper, ponder-
osa pine and aspen forests which have the potential to produce significant,
predictable understory vegetation suitable for forage for livestock and big
game.
Other woodlands do not normally provide significant vegetation suitable for
grazing. These include dense ponderosa pine, lodgepole pine, mixed conifer
and spruce-fir types. These will not be considered as grazable except where
grazing is available due to an area being cut over or burned. In these cases,
management trill be based on the mayor forage species in the understory.
The following table illustrates, for planning purposes, the present classi-
fication of tree covered land in Colorado.
Woodland Canopy Range Grazable Other
Type Class $ Site Woodland Woodland Remarks
Pirtiyon-Juniper 0-ZO X Refer to T.G.
