~J
_ Bi0.5Y5TEM5
. RESEARCH
Robert f,. ..^,iglow
diglow Land Survey Co
234 E St.
Salida, CO 81271
Dear I?r. 9i01o1v:
• ~IIII~'I~II~~~~~III
999
DRAWER 1037 SALIDA, COLORADO 81201
TELEPHONE 303 539-3531
December 21, 1773
He r2 are my recommendations concerning the question asked in
Ex~ibit E of Mr. I.oye's letter:
2. 4s ,/ou knoly, the final height of file highlvall in Zone 2
will be approximately 50 bo 77 feet ;iinh. This will be an almost
vertical wall of very stable mineral material that will not require
stabilization.
3. 3ecause of tale depth of the top soil in the new areas to be
• opened, there will be sufficient top soil for all areas both old
and new - to be covered to a depth of 6 to 8 inc:7es ~,vllicll js suf-
ficient.
4. Tile plant species in the seed application list should Ile
the ones used to revegetate the area, with two changes. I recom-
mend t:~at Crested vl:~eat Grass be substituted for Needle and Thread
Grass at a rate of E lbs/acre. Smooth 8rome s:lould not be used at
all and :lestern llheat Grass s:~ould not be suhstituted for.
5. I believe t;~at the proposed seed mix will suffice for all
slopes since we have included species at least somew:lat adapted
to the drier, steeper slopes.
6. If, at the end of t~vo gro~:ling seasons, you do not have
at least 20 pifion and /or juniper seedlings establis`led/acre, then
you should plan to plant enough potted pi4fon and juniper (a mix
would be best - pifion on t~~e better sites and juniper on tie more
rigorous sites) seedlings to brin7 the count of establis:led plants
to 27/acre.
I hope this will be satisfactory. I think the above recommenda-
tions are both reasonable and yet sufficient.
Since 1~ yours,
• • ~ ~1A1'~..~
.E. Owen, Ph.D. Plant Ecology
Director for Scientific Liaison
