CRYSTAL PIT
OPERATION OVERVIEW
• Due to the depletion of road maintenance materials for the Pikes
Peak Highway, which is operated by the City of Colorado Springs, a new
source of aggregate was needed. A site was found adjacent to the
highway on U. S. Forest Service land. Following is the pe~'mit
application for this site.
Essentially, the pit is a dual phase, 9.7 acre gravel pit which
will extract material for an anticipated life of about 20 years. Each
phase of the operation exists in a shallow valley separated by a low
ridge. The valleys are not visible from any locations along the
highway and therefore visual impact is of little concern.
The operation maps are contained in an envelope at the back of
this application. The maps were produced at a 2 foot contour interval
and a scale of 1"= 100'. Boundaries were established by surveying.
• The current land use of the property is as wildlife habitat. The
final land use will be a return to wildlife habitat. The vegetation
of the site is a combination of forest and grassland, but much of each
phase will be conducted in grassland areas. The revegetation plan
will return the site to grassland and will rely upon natural invasion
to return any forest to the property.

1
