CRYSTAL PIT <br />OPERATION OVERVIEW <br />• Due to the depletion of road maintenance materials for the Pikes <br />Peak Highway, which is operated by the City of Colorado Springs, a new <br />source of aggregate was needed. A site was found adjacent to the <br />highway on U. S. Forest Service land. Following is the pe~'mit <br />application for this site. <br />Essentially, the pit is a dual phase, 9.7 acre gravel pit which <br />will extract material for an anticipated life of about 20 years. Each <br />phase of the operation exists in a shallow valley separated by a low <br />ridge. The valleys are not visible from any locations along the <br />highway and therefore visual impact is of little concern. <br />The operation maps are contained in an envelope at the back of <br />this application. The maps were produced at a 2 foot contour interval <br />and a scale of 1"= 100'. Boundaries were established by surveying. <br />• The current land use of the property is as wildlife habitat. The <br />final land use will be a return to wildlife habitat. The vegetation <br />of the site is a combination of forest and grassland, but much of each <br />phase will be conducted in grassland areas. The revegetation plan <br />will return the site to grassland and will rely upon natural invasion <br />to return any forest to the property. <br /> <br />1 <br />
