United States Natural Resources Monte Vista F.O.
Department of Conservation 0881 N. Hwy 285
Ayricutture (USDAi Service (NRCSi Monte Vista. My experience is that the cost of renting or hiring a drill will be less than the
oust of the extra seed, and the chances of success are significantly better. ff broadcasting,
incorporate the seed in some manner (drag, harrow, lightly disc, cultipack, or some other
method).
1 assume this will be an irrigated seeding, so anytime after the May 1 will work. If this is a
dryland seeding, seed'mg should be dale from July 1 to July 30. These are the best dates to
seed as far as precipitation is concerned. I wtll attach a separate sheet for a dryland seeding. I
normalty do not rec~mmerrd fertil'¢er, since d tends to favor annual weeds at the expense of the
grass. If you do use fertil¢er, d should be based on a soil test, and kept to minimal rates.
To briefly explain the attached seeding recommendation, amounts in column 1 are the rates for
a full seeding of that species. Column 2 is the percent t recommendin the mix, so multiplying
column 1 by column 2 equals column 3, which is the actual amount of that species to be
seeded, per acre. Rate shown are "Pure t_ive Seed', so be sure the seed company knows the
recommendation is in PLS. PLS discarnts losses due to lack of germination or other seeds, so
will always be less than the bulk amount needed. lt a species/variety I recommended is not
available or is prohibitively expensive, reduce or remove that species. Increase the percent of
another species to return the combined seeding rate to 100°k. Since I was not certain of the
acreage, I have shown the amount for 1 acre. You will need to multiply that amount by your
acreage.
Slopes to be seeded should be 3:1 or flatter. You need to stockpile or import topsoil so there is
a minimum of 4 inches on any area in be seeded (12 Indies would be much better). If the
minimum is used, disking a uric the next 2 inches will provide about 6 inches of fairly good
rooting medium.
.l,~Gs4 d ~%~Gti2Y~
teven L_ Russel!
District Conservationist
