Lorencim Canvon Mine - Aauaric Terhnical ReOart
• No threatened or endangered fish or other aquatic species were found within the analysis area.
The USFWS (USFWS, 1996) identified two T&E fish species as potentially occurring in the study
area, the Arkansas darter (Etheostoma cragini, candidate), and the Arkansas River population of
the speckled chub (Ertrarius aestivalis tetranemus, special concern). Neither of these species were
found during the fish inventory. Additionally, no critical habitat for any threatened or endangered
aquatic species occur within the analysis area. Populations of flathead chub (formerly classified
as a federal candidate species) were observed within the permit area.
Macroinvertebrates
Macroinvertebratebioassesment metrics for the seven sample stations are presented in Table A-2.
Additionally, raw taxa and abundance data are presented in Appendix A-1.
The metrics indicate that the macroinvertebrate communities of the stream stations are in fair to
good condition. The majority of the abundance and taxa came from the orders Ephemeroptera,
Plecoptera, and Trichoptera (EPT) ranging from 86.9 to 96.1 percent of the total abundance
(Table A-2). Members from these three orders are generally considered to exist in clean waters
and will generally be eliminated or depressed in disturbed environments. Diversity ranged from
• fair to good and total number of taxa ranged from 14 to 21. Additionally, biotic condition
(exemplified by HBI) ranged from very-good to excellent ratings.
Because Lorencito Canyon is an intermittent stream, these good metric ratings found at Lorencito
Canyon stations represent healthy conditions. As with the fisheries data, the macroinvertebrate
data indicate that LC-1 and LC-4 are within perennial reaches of Lorencito Canyon.
Many of the metrics applied to the stream stations data are not applicable for pond (lentic) stations.
However, all metrics are presented for the Cow Canyon pond stations for general information
(Table A-2). As is typically found in stagnant stock ponds, these stations data indicate that the
macroinvertebrate communities are limited and are comprised primarily of tolerant organisms
(Appendix A-1).
Periphyton
Periphyton bioassessment metrics for the 5 stream stations are presented in Table A-3.
Additionally, raw taxa and abundance data for diatoms and nondiatoms are presented in Appendix
A-2.
•
aquuic.475/April 24, 1997 5 (revised 4/24/97)
