Methane Drainage Wells Project Plan
Technical Revision 101; Holes 19-09, 19-10 and 19.11
Page 2 of 14
DRILL HOLES 19-09,19-10,19-11 PROJECT PLAN (8-Sep-OS)
Technical Revision Number 101
PROJECT DESCRIPTION
The proposed project consists of drilling three (3} methane drainage wells (MDWs) to
facilitate mining in the B Seam (Drill Holes 19-09, 19-10, and 19-11). The proposed
wells are in Section 15, of T.13S, R.90W, 6`t` Principal Meridian, Gunnison County,
Colorado. The proposed project is within the current permitted coal mining area (Permit
Number C-80-007) and on land surface owned by Mountain Coal Co., L.L.C. Hole 19-09
is on Federal Coal (BLM) Lease COC-056447; Holes 19-10 and 19-11 aze on Fee Coal
owned by MCC.
Mountain Coal Company (MCC) is the land surface owner for the drill sites and the
associated light use roads.
MCC's overall plan for drilling and reclaiming MDWs was originally approved by
CDMG on 15 July 2002 as Technical Revision 96 -Project Plan for Methane Drainage
Wells for Panels 16, 17, 17S, 18-24. The Forest Service performed an Environmental
Assessment of MCC's Methane Drainage Wells Plan, and approval was received in the
Decision Notice and Finding of No Significant Impact, May 31, 2002. The three proposed
MDWs (19-09, 19-10 and 19-11) are part of this overall project but were not proposed for
inclusion in the US Forest Service reviews. As such, these wells are the subject of this
separate Technical Revision. Because these wells are not on US Forest Service managed
lands, a US Forest Service review of their installation is not required.
The attached Proposed B Seam MDWs surface map at a scale of 1" = 1000' depicts the
general locations of proposed drill pads, methane drainage wells, and the new road.
These maps also show the proposed MDWs in relation to the land ownership, mine
permit and lease boundaries and other mine features.
SURFACE TOPOGRAPHY
The elevations of the proposed borehole locations range from approximately 6550 ft. at
drill hole pad 19-10 and 19-11, to approximately 7,110 ft. at 19-09. The terrain is
comprised of steep slopes and mesa tops formed within the Wasatch and Mesa Verde
Formations and the colluvium and alluvium layers of the slope debris. The principle
drainages in this azea are unnamed tributaries to either Sylvester Gulch or the North Fork
of the Gunnison River.
GEOLOGY
The proposed Project would include drilling along the southeastern edge of the Piceance
Basin within the Somerset Coal Field, occurring on the Somerset U.S.G.S. 7 1/2-minute
quadrangle map.
