A sample of water was presented for analysis for iron content on 12/17/02. The sample was
taken that same day. A 'quick' test for total iron was requested. Therefore, a colorimetric
analysis was performed.
When combined with a triazine derivative, Iron (II) ions form a violet complex. Iron (III)
may also be idrntified in this manner after reduction with the proper reagent to the Iron (II)
species. The range for this test of iron (Fe) is 0.04-1.0 mg/L Fe.
Five ml of the sample were acidified with HCl and treated to reduce any Iron (III) species to
Iron (II) species. The triazine derivative was added and the developed color was checked by
colorimetric procedures. The sample was found to contain 0.06 mg/L Fe.
D. F.
