• Conclusions <br />The preliminary calculations indicate that vertical walls in the surface mine, as shown <br />with the conditions in Figure 1, have a factor of safety against slope failure of about 3. <br />This factor of safety should be adequate for long-term global slope stability. <br />Due to the jointing in the limestone and dessication of shale interbeds, slope raveling and <br />rockfall could be a maintenance and minor safety issue. Benching could be used to <br />reduce this hazard by creating collection areas for inevitable raveling and rockfall. <br />References <br />Michael W.
