<br />. ~ 1/s2 <br />~ Rf--Unnamed very gravelly sandy loam, 15 to 40 percent slopes. This <br />shallow, well soil is on mountainsides. It formed in residuum derived <br />dominantly from gneiss. The native vegetation is mainly Ponderosa pine. At <br />lower elevations, Gambel oak commonly dominates the site. Elevation ie 8,000 <br />to 9,000 feet. The average annual precipitation is 16 to 18 inches, the <br />average annual air temperature is 41 to 45 degrees F, and the average <br />frost-free period is 75 to 95 days. <br />Typically, the surface is covered with a mat of pine litter about 1 inch <br />thick. The surface layer is dark grayish brown very gravelly sandy loam <br />about 3 inches thick. The subsurface layer is very gravelly sandy loam about <br />6 inches thick. Fractured gneiss is at a depth of 9 inches. The soil is <br />slightly acid. Some pedons have a thin sandy clay loam subsoil just above <br />/~ • the bedrock. <br />\' Included in this unit is about 5 percent moderately deep Lakehelen soil <br />on lower parts of side slopes. Also included is about 5 percent deep <br />Jodero soil on footslopes and drainageways. Also included is about 5 percent <br />Rock outcrop on ridges and in steeper areas. Rock outcrops generally forms <br />small, jagged knobs and ledges. <br />Permeability of this Unnamed soil is moderately rapid. Available water <br />capacity is very low. Effective rooting depth is 8 to 20 inches. Runoff is <br />rapid, and the hazard of water erosion is very high. <br />This unit is used for woodland, wildlife habitat, recreation, and <br />livestock grazing. Slope limits access by livestock and results in <br />overgrazing of the less eloping areas. <br />r • <br />
