Forgive our late response. I have
been out-of-state much of the time.
On Friday, December 14, 1990, several of us physically inspected
the open pit. We stand corrected on one point - the operator did
correct the drainage problem.
On Tuesday, December 18, 1990, I reviewed hir. Ullom's revised
report and discussed it with several Fondis concerned citizens., We
wish to comment only on Item 3: Minimization of off-site impacts.
We want the hundred of tons of sand and gravel still remaining in the
creek bed removed before spring, 1991. As you recall, that massive
erosion was caused by non-compliance - berms were not built on either
side of the pit. We strongly disagree that rip rap will protect the
natural stream bank. We refer to Exhibit "D" of the original mining
permit prepared by A1r. Bernie Goetze, dated 9/26/88. "Main problem:
Request reclamation include use of these species (trees and bushes)
along with stabilization structures from steel or concrete, etc. r..o
deter massive corrosion."
When the mine operator bulldozed out those old ponderosa pine
trees and root systems along the cliff face, they destroyed the natural
integrity of this soft Dawson arkose.
Our final comment is this - the operator has already mined too
deep along several parts of the mine - when reclamation occurs, they
will have to install additional cost prohibitive stabilization
