Pleasures to enhance
establishment of seeding shrubs in the shrub clump estaolishment areas will
include the use of direct haul topsoil and/or a modification of the regular
herbaceous Seed mix (so a5 t0 reduce the competition be*-weep herbaceous
species and seedling shrubs).
• -he Division has two remaining concerns. First, as you have observed, a
standard of 1,900 woody Sterns per acre has been recor;tnended by the Division Of
Wildlife far reclaimed lands in Northwest Colorado. Given the scmewhac
generalized nature of the shrub estaolisnment plan provided by Colowyo and th=
lack of specific justificatio-n for the proposs: 850 step per acre step density
• standard, the Division dces not feel comforta:,:e tin approving a woody density
standard which is lower Lhan that recemrerded by the Division of Wildlife.
Second, the Alan indicates t.iut in some instances the regular seedmix will not
t•e seeded in order [o reduce herbaceous competition. The Division agrees that
an alternative seed mix is warranted. Fnformation should be submitted cn the
moeifiad seed mix and seeding rate and the criteria which will De applied in
selecting areas whicfi would not be Seeded with the regular seed mix {acreage,
slope, erosion control etc.).
In resolution of Stipulation \o. 5, the Division sets the woody plant density
standard for the Colowyo ;•line at lODO stems per acre for all portions of the
reclaimed area except perimeter slopes which are steeper than 5:1.
Shrub reestablishment is to be acccrclished zs specified in this letter and
your 12tters of November 8, 1983 antl Dctober 25, 1964 (with the exception
_ being the oojective of 1pC0 stems per acre rather than 85G stems per acre). ~
3:i;ity standard vrill not be applies to the ;.animater slopes steeper t1.dr. 5:1
•
4.15-15
