GRAVEL
Dear Ms. Nall:
P 0 'boa 95
Ouray CO 9142
1303 325~86(H1

JUN 2 ~. 1994

This letter is to request that Phase I operations for ZMK Gravel in
Ouray County include the provision that during spring runoff, a
portion of the river be allowed to flow into the Phase I area.
Since you have been contacted each of the last two years regarding
the river breaking the berm during spring high water, this request
would allow a solution for bath ZMK Gravel and the Corps of
Engineers. The deposition of 6edload material into the previously
excavated area allows for operations to resume in that area once
the water receeds and the berm has been restored. Native river
material from the Phase I area can be used for the berm repairs
without disturbing the established law-water channel, which will
remain until Fhase II operations are needed.
Attached is a report from Thomas A. Schreiner, Environmental
Protection•Specialist, Division of Minerals & Geology, regarding
our request for a technical revision to eliminate a drop structure
^n the south end of the permit area. Their approval of the
technical revision requires that we monitor the channel geometry
during the life of the mining operation. It also suggests that
bedload material be allowed to re-deposit into the excavated area
as long as there are no impacts within or adjacent to the permitted
area.
Please call if you have any questions regarding this request.
Sincerely,
Robert A.
