• fill should be expected to settle somewhat. Settlement of partially saturated fills is
difficult to predict. Our experience indicates that settlement will be approximately 1!2
to 3/4 percent of the fill height. The following minimum percentages of the maximum
dry density as determined by ASTM D1557 (modified Proctor) are recommended:
a) Below foundations .................... 95%
b) Below floor slabs .................... 90%
c) Below paved areas .................... 95%
d) General overlot fill ................... 95
e) Retaining Walls .. . ............. 88% to 92%
• Suitability of On-Site Soil: The on-site clay soil may be used for fills, except as backfill around
the reclaim tunnel, provided a risk of movement because of its moisture sensitivity can be
assumed for any structures. Following our recommendations should minimize the risk of
movement using the site clays. We understand that inert soils are generally not available on the
site and would have to be imported. Lower plasticity, more granular soils, where located in
borrows, should be stockpiled for use in fills for critical floor slab areas or as subbase in
roadways~~opsoil in fill or borrow areas should be stripped and segregated so that the fill will
be free of deleterious materials. The on-site soil should be processed so that the fill does not
contain rock fragments larger than 6 inches, particulazly in the upper 3 feet of fill under
structures or roads. In lower fills, boulders up to 18 inches can be used, provided it can be
demonstrated that no voids result and boulders are generally not in contact with each other.
~•
16
