•
Ground Water: Ground water was not encountered in most of the borings drilled at this site.
Borings 15, 16 and 18 encountered water at depths of 20, 27 and 48 feet, respectively. We
noted water levels at a depth of 47 feet in DH-42 and at a depth of 108 feet in DH-54. These
two holes were drilled by others and casing/completion data is unknown. Ground water
probably flows within the lowest part of the slide mass and on top of the failure surface in rock,
at considerable depth over most of the site. However, in the portal area, it is likely that the
ground water level is somewhat higher, due to the underdrainage contribution from the new slide
east of the portal, combined with the accumulations of underdrainage from the head of the
ancient slide to the north and west. Based on the available grading plans, the only apparent
critical areas for shallow ground water appear to be in the area of Boring 16, where a major cut
will be required for the haul road west of the breaker bench, and the deep cuts along the haul
road up the west side of the portal bench.
Inclinometers: For use in monitoring during the design and construction phase, we installed
three slope inclinometers, in Boring 10 (50.5 ft), Boring 18 (125 ft) and Boring 23 (110 ft).
These locations were chosen because of their proximity to an existing steep slope (Boring 10)
or proposed deep cut (Borings 18 and 23). At the time of this report, only the baseline reading
had been completed. Therefore, there is no data to compare witft [he baseline readings. Further
readings should be conducted in the late summer or fall of this year, prior to the initiation of
grading construction, and quarterly afterwards, at least through [wo spring wet seasons.
• 12
