.~
8. Razor-Midway area
Moderately deep and shallow, gently sloping to moderately steep, well
drained, clayey soils; formed in residuum from calcareous shale.
Areas of these soils are in the central and southwestern part of the
survey area.
This soil area occupies about 9 percent of the survey area. About
it
30 percent of the area^if Razor soil, 25 percent is Midway soil, and the
remaining 45 percent is soils of minor extent.
Both the Razor and the Midway soils have clay loam surface layers.
i
The depth to shale in the Razor soil is 20 to 40 inches and 10 to 20
inches in the Midway soil. These soils have high shrink-sorell potentials.
The minor_soils in this area are the well drained Rim, Manzanola,
Nelson, Tassel, and 4liley soils. Some military impact areas are also
included: Southeast of the town of Fountain are numerous geologicai
formations referred to as "tepee buttes". The cone shaped "tepee buttes"
are piles of marine rubble rising above the more level plains occurring
in a random, scattered pattern.
This soil area is used mostly for livestocY, grazing. Cultivation is
~9

limited because of low amount of precipitation. Other important uses
are wildlife habitat and for military purposes.
