Peabody
BTU Empire Corporation
September 6, 2005
Mr. Kent Gorham
Environmental Protection Specialist II
Division of Minerals and Geology
1313 Sherman Street, Room 215
Denver, Colorado 80203
(303) 866-4941
RE: Oakie Plaza Well (WWOKI) Abandonment Report
Dear Mr. Gorham
29515 Routt County Road k27
Oak Creek, CO 80467
970.879.3800
R~D~IV~D
SEP 0 9 20D5
Division of Minerals ano Gedopy
Attached please find a copy of the well abandonment form for the 1994 abandonment of the subject well.
As previously indicated, we have been unable to locate a copy of the abandonment report in our archives,
however it appears that the abandonment was approved under MR-23 on either 7/11 or 7/12 of 1994 and
completed shortly thereafter. A September 29, 1994 DMG inspection report by Janet Binns, indicates that
mining through the well went as planned.
I have spoken to Mr. Joe Shoemaker who was a surveyor at the site during this time period, and with Mr.
Rocky Thompson the geologist for the mine during this period to fill in some of history of the abandonment.
This was a water well installed circa 1970, which was utilized by a local surface owner. Mr. Shoemaker and
Thompson both recalled the necessity of abandoning the well prior to mining through it, and remembered
removal of a building over the original well prior to abandonment. Mr. Thompson remembered the drilling
company that performed the abandonment. His best recollection was that the well was approximately 6
inches in diameter, and was abandoned using a tremmie technique with a neat portland cement. The top of
the well was apparently cut off below ground surface.
If you or Janet have any questions, please contact me directly at (970) 870-2750, or write to me at the
address above.
Best regards,
Brian A.
