INTRODUCTION
• Sedimenution ponds, diversion collection ditches, culverts, and other assodated drainage
structures together comprise the drainage and sediment control system for the Southfield Mine
and Loadout. These structures have been designed and rnntructed or installed by EFCI and it's
predecessor, Dorchester Coal Company (Dorchester), wi[hin a dynamic framework of changing
regulations, constantly improving design practices, and new materials.
Over the years, both Dorchester and EFCI have utilized commonly accepted engineering and
opera[ional practices to design and constructor install drainage structures. Selection and design
of erosion control practices for diversion/rnllection ditches and pond isle[ and outlet structures
have been based on a broad spectrum of engineering and hydrologic design studies and
references.
In the in[erest of providing a rnnsistent basis for future erosion control designs, EFCI in early
1993 reviewed available references and adopted the design methodologies presented in the Surface
Mining Water Diversion Design Manual (Office of Surface Mining, 1982). The following
sections aze extracted from this reference and represent the general basis for design of erosion
protettion subsequent to adoption. It should be noted that this reference serves only as guidance
for design practices and methodologies and actual prattices and methodologies may vary as
appropriate to most acwrately reflect site spedflc conditions and any changes in [ethnology,
accepted practice, or available materials.
•
~J
