9 <br />C, <br />J <br />3 WINDY GULCH MONITORING <br />3.7 General <br />Three types of data have been collected from the installations in Windy Gulch. These include <br />water level measurements in wells and drive point piezometers, flow measurements in weirs, and <br />chemical analyses of water samples collected from wells, drive point piezometers, and weirs. <br />Water level measurements have been taken manually using a well sounder graduated to0.01 ft. <br />Flow measurements have been collected automatically every half hour at each weir by a digital <br />datalogger. Water samples have been collected about once a month in the non-winter months <br />since the installations were completed in the fall of 1998. <br />3.2 Water levels <br />• 3.2.1 Wells <br />The water level in wells HW-1 and HW-2 has been monitored since November 1998. The timing <br />and magnitude of water elevation fluctuations in wells HW-1 and HW-2 have been congruent <br />since their installation. In general, the water levels tend to increase during periods of spring runoff <br />and heavy precipitation and decrease during the dryer fall and winter months. The water level <br />elevation in HW-1 ranged from about 9,341.0 to 9,342.5 ft. These water levels are consistently <br />below the Windy Gulch channel which is about elevation 9,350 ft adjacent to HW-1. The water <br />level elevation in HW-2 ranged from about 9,359.5 to 9,361.0 ft. These water levels are similar to <br />the elevations of the adjacent Windy Gulch channel, which is about 9,361 ft. A hydrograph of <br />water levels in HW-1 and HW-2 is included in Appendix B. <br />3.2.2 Drive point piezometers <br />Drive point piezometers 1 and 2 (DP-1, DP-2) were dry at the time of their installation. DP-1 filled <br />partially with water by April 1998. DP-2 has remained dry. A hydrograph of the water level for <br />DP-1 is included in Appendix B. <br />The water level in DP-3, DP-4, and DP-5 has been monitored since their installation. In both DP-3 <br />and DP-4, the water level has decreased slightly over the dryer, winter months, and rose quickly <br />during the spring snow melt and wetter early fall months of 1999. Fluctuations in water levels in <br />. DP-3 and DPI have been congruent with changes seen in wells HW-1 and HW-2. Furthermore, <br />the water levels in DP-1, DP-3, and DP~3 have been observed to increase during periods of <br />higher discharge in Windy Gulch in May and September 1999 (Appendix B). <br />
