DEPARTMENT OF NATURAL RESOURCES
David H. Getches, Executive Director
MINED LAND RECLAMATION DIVISION
DAVID C. SNELTON, Director
Richard D. Lamm
Governor
May 8, 1985
Mr. Scott Jones
Environmental Engineer
Snowmass Coal Company
P.O. Box 980
Carbondale, Colorado 81623
RE: Review of Annual Hydrologic Report for Water Year 1984, North Thompson
Creek Mines - Fire No. C-025-81
Dear Mr. Jones:
The Division has reviewed the above-referenced report. The report is well
organized, concise, and contains all informational requirements. Presented
below is a brief discussion organized according to the format of the report.
Any comments requiring a response from the operator are numbered.
Surface Water Quality
Frequency of sampiing and chemical parameter analysis are in compliance with
Section 3.6.1.3 of the permit application document. No definable trends were
noted in surface water quality from upstream to downstream sites or with time
for either. North Thompson Creek or the Roaring fork River. The discussion
provided by the operator adequately describes the minor observed water quality
variations.
For each of the four surface water quality sampling sites, quarterly data from
water year 1984 are compared to pre-permit mean values. The following
suggestions are included for future reporting.
1. For clarification purposes, the number of pre-permit samples used
to generate the mean values should be given, and the location of
this data (i.e., permit application document, mine files, published
report, etc.) should be indicated by reference.
2. Field measurements of sample pH, conductivity, flow and temperature
should be included with the other water quality data in the annual
report to facilitate review of the data.
Ground Water Quality
No significant water quality trends are noted for the ground water monitoring
wells with the exception of Hole No. 1, which has shown an increase in Total
;~ Dissolved Solids (TDS) from a pre-permit mean of 1427 mg/L to 7030 mg/L on
May 30, 1984. This increase is due to increases in calcium, magnesium, sodium
and sulfate.
423 Centennial Building, 1313 Sherman Street Denver, Colorado 80203 Tel. (303) 866-3567
