Letter of Objection R Conc~"Line Camp Gravel Pit" (Application #: M-2001)
Thursday, March 01, 2001 -Page: 6
The Dolores River is a navigable stream and is uncontrolled at the
location of the proposed gravel pit. In high water years (i.e. in any year
in which there is a high snow melt or high spring rain) the river actually
changes course onto the private land of an adjacent farm belonging to
the Akins. [Exhibit C shows the topography of the site and surrounding
land according to U.S. Forest Service surveys. It also shows the course
of the river (which runs through Akin property) in high-water years.]
In past years, the U.S. Department of Agriculture and Colorado
Department of Agriculture have worked with the Akins to avoid soil
erosion and pollution from upstream sources in high-water years. In a
high water year, the Dolores river, and all of the pollutants the line camp
gravel pit discharges into it (in the form of TDS or otherwise) will
stagnate on the private farm of the persons submitting this letter of
objection and concern. Below is Figure 1 modified to show the actual
flow of the river in a high water year and where the pollutants will
eventually come to rest.
Figure 3 -Flow of Dolores River and gravel pi[ pollutants in high-water years as they slow over the
Akin farm
The White arrow shows [he only point where [he gravel pit can discharge waste and pollutants because i[
has only a few feet on the Dolores River (the remainder of the land along the Dolores river is U.S. Forest
Service land or private land).
In Figure 3, the white arrow shows the path of pollutants discharged
from the gravel pit site into the Dolores River. The dark line shows the
Clow of the Dolores River across the Akin ranch in high-water years and
the area where the pollutants will coagulate and saturate the ground.
Four States Aggregates, LLC 01 MAR 2001
Letter of Objection & Concern: Line Camp Pit FSA-LCP-D1-001
