• DRILLING AND TESTING REPORT FOR
GROUND WATER MONITORING AT
THE NORTH THOMPSON CREEK MINE,
PITKIN COUNTY, COLORADO
INTRODUCTION
four bedrock ground water monitoring holes were drilled in the vici-
nity of the North Thompson Creek Mine during the period of April 17
through May 8, 1980. One of these four holes was plugged and aban-
doned after considerable difficulty in completing the hole as planned,
due to excessive artesian pressure and flow. The three completed
holes were tested and sampled during the period of May 8 through May
14, 1980. In addition to these three holes, two alluvial refuse area
monitoring holes were tested.
• The drilling was done by the Golden Eagle Drilling Company of Frisco,
Colorado, using a Speedstar SS-15 II Air-Rotary drilling rig. Since
all drilling was performed with either air or air-mist, the lithology
and hydrology were easily observed during drilling. All holes were
drilled with a 7-7/8" bit to a shallow depth to set a steel surface
casing and a 6-1/2" bit to total depth.
Testing was performed by either pumping water from the hole at a
constant rate and measuring drawdown and/or recovery of the water
level, or by injecting a slug of known volume and measuring residual
head at discrete time intervals.
L~
