1`
INSPECTION REPORT
Site: National King Coal Mine, Hesperus, Colorado
Inspected By: Don R. May, P.E., Project Engineer
Inspection Date: December 21, 1992
December 28; 1992
Coal Waste Pile: The coal waste pile and the surrounding area were inspected fo_r compliance
with the state approved design and for signs of instability and erosion. The waste pile
remains in basically the same condition as it has been in for the past year, with no visible
problem areas.
Portions of the technical plan as outlined in the Waste Bank Design report have been
constructed. This includes the drainage ditch on the north hillside of the eastside valley which
will be used to divert uncontaminated upstream flow around the waste pile. The new access
road, located to the south of the new ditch is partially complete, see photographs.
A small amount of recent mine waste has been stockpiled adjacent to the road
approximately at the location where the bottom the fill will be as shown in the rec]amation
design. This material will need to be removed prior to construction of the tce drain and
waste pile intercept ditch, see photographs. I will alert King Coal that until the drain and
ditch are constructed in the spring, waste should be dumped on the existing pile.
The attached sketch shows the design configuration and what needs to be constructed prior
to piling waste in a new location. Riprap should be place on portions of the new diversion
ditch as stated in the amendment to TR-4 dated February 25, 1992.
Sediment Ponds: The waste-ponds were inspected for sedimentation and erosion. Although
snow covered, the ponds appear in good condition. Recent construction brought the ponds
into compliance with state regulation. The elevation of the low level outlet on the west pond
may need to be adjusted based upon the result of the survey performed by Harry Ranney in
October.
RECD@0>/~-
DEC 311992
DIVi,iIGP~ C)r`
MINERALS & UECL «~~-
