• 9.3-1. The Unnamed Series 51-deep phase is the only soil which has an A <br />horizon shallower than six inches. Accordingly, six inches was removed for <br /> this series. All of the other soils had an A horizon greater than six <br /> inches and were removed to the bottom of the A horizon, with one exception <br /> being the Coutis-like series. <br /> The Coutis-like soil decreases in fertility and organic matter below <br /> the All horizon, beginning at a depth of approximately six -inches. In <br /> addition to the lower fertility, the gravel content increases from five <br /> percent in the Al to ten percent in the AC horizon, beginning at a depth of <br /> about 13 inches for the typic pedon. The gravel content increases up to 30 <br /> percent in the lower AC horizon with an additional 15 percent of cobbles <br /> and stones present. This was not true for all of the pedons described for <br /> this series, but wide fluctuation of the gravel content combined with <br /> decreasing fertility with increasing depth rendered this soil <br /> unsatisfactory as a soil reconstruction material below 13 inches. <br /> Therefore, the series was removed to a depth of 13 inches, which represents <br /> the All and Alz horizons of the typic pedon. <br /> For the Unnamed Series S1-very deep phase an average depth of 90 <br /> inches was used for calculating soil volumetrics.
