999
~z~
0.µ.., .
°~~-° ~~~ ~- -- June 16, 1982
La Vet a, CO 81055
,' ~~;d 4 1982
M~n,~=p i ~^~D RE.C!_AMA.TION
Mined Land Reclamation Board CC''J 'J:~a?. 71 r'". Cf%~~ <.;; ~~mrgp
Room 423, 1313 Sherman Street
Denver, CO 80203
Gentlemen:
This letter is in regards to a public notice published in the Huerfano
World newspaper on June 11, 1982. It states that Mr. L. Otto Goemmer
proposes to establish a gravel pit in the West 1/2 SWSE, Section 32, Township
29 South, Range 68 West of the 6th P.M. As a neighboring rancher joining
Mr. Goemmer's ranch, I drive by this proposed gravel pit every day on
Colorado Highway 12. This is an important winter and summer route for tourists
that have become important to this area. It has been apparent that Mr. Goemmer
has a gravel pit that was opened in the early 1970's and abandoned without
any attempt to return vegetation to the site. The application for the
new permit states that it will be in operation until 1994, and no reclamation
will start until operation ceases.
It has been my observation that it is doubtful that once disturbed, this area
can be returned to any vegetation that is like the native rangeland. This
very rocky gm und, along the highway, would be very difficult if not im-
possible to replant to grass. It should be pointed out that Mr. Goemmer
feeds many bulls on this general area every winter.
I would like to go on record ~ opposing this gravel pi tit p~ because
if allowed it will undoubtably'result in the further detereuri-zation of
our rangeland and scenic resources in this-small 3nd_beautiful area.
Sincerely,
-gip
Armano Cassai
~~2-35~y
