EXHIBIT D - VEGETATION AND SOILS
~. ._ ~ FREMONT COUNTY DISTRICT N0. 2 GRAVEL PIT
DECEMBER 1, 1980
UNITED STATES DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE
SOIL CONSERVATION SERVICE, p.0. Box 980, Canon City,CO
• January 15, 1980
Ms. Dolly Duefield
Fremont County Department
of Planning and Zoning
'.0. Box 349
Canon City, Co 81212
Dear Ms. Duefield,
This is in response to your letter dated December 21, 1979, requesting
a soils and vegetation evaluation for reclamation plan on the Fremont
County/District /~2 Gravel Pit. The property investigated is legally
described as a tract in the NF$4 N4~ of Section 1$, T. 19S.,R.6941.,
a tract in the NEB NE4 Section 16, T.19S.,R.694+'., and a tract in the
SE4 NE a of Section 16, T.19S.,R.69tJ. o£ the bth P.M.
On January 5, 1980 Saul Engel, Soil Scientist and Dean Loukonen, Range
Conservationist, conducted an investigation of the soils and vegetation
at this site. Attachment A shows soil properties observed or ingerred
from representative soil profiles observed. The Cj profile in attachment
A is representative, as to characteristics and behavior, of soils in the
Cj map unit. The Km profile is representative, as to characteristics
and behavior, of soils in the Km map unit. Note that each layer is rated
as reconstruction material in the right-most column of Attachment A.
Attachment B is the criteria used to rate each horizon, or layer, of the
soil profiles in Attachment A. Also included is the narrative accompany-
ing the criteria table. This material is taken from the Soil Conservation
Service National Soila Handbook.
Rock fragments are dominantly gravel-size with 0 to 30 percent cobble and
0 to 5 percent stones. The sodium absorption ratio, salinity, erosion
factor and wind erodiability groups of all layers of these soils rate good.
Each layer rates fair as reconstruction material for vegetation reclamation.
The factors moderately limiting the horizons of the Cj profile are a low
available xater holding capacity and excessive lime. The Kim soil is
rated fair as reconstructive material because of excessive lime.
Attachment C is a tracing of soil mapping at a scale of approximately 2.64
inches equal one mile.
~ S--/
o;
