arm against sliding. Material would be brought in with trucks or
scrapers and compacted. A drainage systems for both subsurface water and
surface water would also be installed.
Retaining walls are generally a last resort method and only work in
certain applications. They are expensive to design and construct and will
only be used if absolutely necessary.
Geosynthetics or Geogrids
These methods are being used with success throughout the country. Here
again, the slide and remediation area has to lend itself to the
application of these materials. Although they tend to perform well under
most situations, the cost of the materials and labor to properly install
the materials may not lend itself to certain applications.
Other Methods
There are numerous other methods of stabilization that should be noted
here. Consideration of these methods will be dealt with on a case by
case basis. Listed below are a few of these methods.
- Pile systems
- Anchor systems
a. Rock bolting
b. Soil Nailing
c. Tie Backs
- Hardening of the soils
Additional Investigation
In order to verify subsoil strata, additional investigation will be
conducted. A total of six, soil backhoe pits will be dug in the location
shown on Figure 3S and 4S. These will be pit numbers B, 1, 2, 3, 6, and
7 unless access presents a problem, the alternate pits will be used. The
intent of Pit No. B will be to clear up Mr. Stover's question regarding
the origin of material on the northern dam embanlanent abutment. The
other five pits will be excavated to further define the material mapped
as Qug between Stations 55+00 and 61+00. These pits should clear up Dr.
Pendleton's concerns regarding sections of the road alignment crossing
the slope.
If the pits indicate that previously unforeseen problems may be initiated
during the construction phase, the appropriate steps will be taken to
correct the situation.
i
13
