Page 2
- Seedbed Preparation:
A seedbed should be prepared immediately following tl~e shaping
and grading of the slopes. If completion of these activities
does not coincide with the proper time of seeding, it may be
necessary to mulch or _lant an annual cover crop to protect
th=_ soil until the area can be seeded to permanent cover.
Topsoil should be applied after shaping and grading have been
completed. (rxivting topsoil should be stockpiled and used or
additional topsoi'_ may have to be Nicked in to reclaim the
area. The site should t:ien be tilled to a depth of six inches,
which permits the topsoil to bind with the existing soil. This
prevents air pockets, enco~u•ages root penetration, and prevents
topsoil slippage on slopes.
Fertilizer should then be applied immediately prior +.o seeca ng
and incorporated to a depth of 2 to !~ inches at rates of 50 lb~acre
of available nitrogen and 50 lb~acre of available phosphorus.
If proper equipment is used, fertilizer may be applied at the
time of seeding. Firm the seedbed by c~L tipackin~ or a similar
operation, if needed.
• - Seeding:
Seeding should be done prior to anticipated periods of precipi-
tation (P;ovember 1 through T°2y 31 ). Seeding should not be dyne
if the soil is frozen. A grass drill is recommended for seeding
3rasses. The drill sho~ild be equipped Faith a satisfactory feed-
ing mechanism, a~ tater, doable disk f~i ro~.r openers and packer
~.+heels. grill seed io a depth of 1~3" to 3~l:" deep. :.fisted bela;a
is a mixtiure of mrasses suitable for seeding.
Since the soils are so variable, different seeding mixtures
should be used, depending on the texture of the tppsoii s+.oc-
piled.
ror sandy loam textured soils, the following seeding mi:<tu=e
•wo ild be adequate:
j: of Species Total ?LS lb ,*
Species Yariety ates~Acre in ?'.fixture Species/Acre
31ue 3xama Covington 3.0 25 0.75
•:estern wheat Barton 10.0 25 t:.0
Sand dropseed 0.5 25 0.1~
Sideoats grama Vaughn 3.0 25 2.25
•
