Pond Operation, Maintenance and Removal
All of the ponds located at TCC's surface facilities., except for Pond B, have risers with orifices as the primary
• spillway. Emergency spillways are open channels designed to pass the required event. The risers are inspected on
a weekly basis at the MSHA ponds (D and G) and quarterly at all other ponds. The visual inspeMions provide
information on the condition of the primary and emergency spillways and embankment. Any maintenance items
are noted and repaired in a tir~ly fashion.
0~
Sediment levels in the various ponds will be surveyed every three years. If the sediment level is 60% of the design,
the pond will be scheduled for cleaning. The cleaning will typically be done during late summer or fall to allow for
good working conditions. Material removed from the pond will be placed in the Pit 2 area.
When TCC has shown the ponds are not required to insure compliance with discharge permit requirements, they
will be removed. The removal will include salvaging available topsoil from the embankment and adjacent azea,
removal of primary and emergency spillways, grading the pond in to blend in with surrounding topography, /
replacing topsoil and seeding with approved seed mixture. The reclaimed pond(s) will be monitored as per the (S~"
requirements presented in the reclamation plan.
Summary
U summary, the existing sediment control facilities were adapted for use in handling and treating water discharge
from the Foidel Creek Mine area. NPDES Permits will be obtained for any new surface discharge points.
Monitoring of flow rate and quality of effluent for ponds B, C, D, E, F, G, and T will continue as required by
NPDES permit CO-0027154.
C~

"`SD
f
~r h
\~~
a~
\~\

4~ ~'
~ ~ ,/
ntY ~~!
/ ~~ \ ~ r
Permit Renewal No. 3 Tab 1 Page 5 1/15/00
