Deserado: Similar scenario, Steve Wathen sampled in May as a result of Shawn Smith's
concerns of mine water discharge quality from current mining location. This
discharge is at the Sump Dewatering Hole #3 (NPDES pt. 026). Eventually,
upon approval of TR-30, a process pond and gravel bed system will be
constructed that this discharge water will pass through prior to release to Red
Wash. Shawn's concern originated from the correlation that the further North
they mine the poorer the water quality becomes. They are actively
discharging from SDH#3 without the pond or gravel bed to treat the water.
By sampling prior to their construction I felt we'd have a better handle on the
effectiveness of their treatment system.
Likewise, Western Fuels-Utah has consistently been unable to pass their WET
testing (biological parameters) and has been working with the Health
Department on this. I have highlighted the parameters I feel are of primary
concern in blue.
If you have further questions, you know where to find me.
