n
LJ
However, as recently discussed in "Salinity Tolerance in Plants, Strategies
for Crop Improvement" (edited by Richard C. Staples and Gary H. Toenniessen,
1984), some genera of the families Cyperaceae and Juncaceae exhibit salt
tolerance. These grasslike plant families include the genera Carex and
Juncus. The particular species which were studied are not located in this
region, however, other species which grow in the area are likely to be salt
tolerant as well. Twentymile Coal Company has thus regarded species of Carex
and Juncus as moderately tolerant.
Table 3, Middle Creek Alluvial Valley Floor Vegetative Cover of Irrigated
Pastures, describes the vegetative cover and composition for Pastures 1 and 2
on a weighted average basis. A total of 30 cover transects were conducted.
The total vegetative cover is 74.3%. Grasses comprise 61.6%, grasslike plants
cover 3.0%, and fortis cover 9.7%. Of the grasses, slender wheatgrass, smooth
brome, and tall fescue are considered moderately tolerant. Similar species of
other tolerant grasses include intermediate wheatgrass, western wheatgrass,
and Idaho fescue. The total cover of moderately tolerant grasses is 38.6%.
• The moderately tolerant sedges and rushes cover 3.0%. Using the weighted
averages as presented on Table 3, Middle Creek Alluvial Valley Floor
Vegetative Cover of Irrigated Pastures, the moderately tolerant species cover
41.6% of the irrigated area, or 56.0% of the relative composition. Moderately
sensitive grass species (orchard grass and timothy) are found in the Middle
Creek region. Redtop and clover (Trifolium), which are considered to be
moderately sensitive, are also found. On a weighted average, a total of 5.6%
of the middle Creek sample area is composed of moderately sensitive species,
which represents 7.6% of the relative composition.
Production data were collected for Pasture 2 of the Middle Creek region. As
shown on Table 1, Fish Creek Pasture Two Vegetative Cover and Production, an
/ I'' average of 46.6 grams per quarter meter square plot were obtained which
6Y I. corresponds to approximately 1,660 pounds per acre of oven dried forage.
Moderately tolerant plants compose 64.1% of that amount and 25.3% is of
moderately sensitive species. The vegetative cover of these two categories in
Pasture 2 is 44.9% for moderately tolerant and 4.20% for moderately
sensitive. The major component of moderately tolerant forage is smooth brome
I ~
LJ
5
Revised 10/1/86
