Kentucky bluegrass is desirable for the approved post-mining lend use for <br />both wildlife and domestic livestock. The rhizomatous habit of this grass makes it an ex- <br />cellent vegetative stabilizer. for erosion control. This species is compatible with the plant <br />and animal species present in the region. Bluegrass is neither poisonous nor noxious. <br />MEADOW FESCUE: FESTUCA ELATIOR L. <br />This species was introduced from Europe. It grows in dry-moist sites from 6,000 to <br />9,900 feet in Colorado. Reproduction occurs sexually and vegetatively. Meadow fescue has <br />the potential of being a colonizing weed. It may be a minor poisoner of livestock (•). <br />Growth in sandy loam, loam and clay loam on gentle slopes is good. On moderate slopes, <br />growth is fair and on steep ones poor. Erosion control potential for this grass is medium. <br />The species has low establishment requirements. Long and short term revegetation poten- <br />tial are medium. Potential biomass production is also rated medium. Fair cover for <br />• small non-game birds and small mammals is produced. Meadow fescue is fair in food <br />value for small mammals. Cattle and sheep forage palatability are both good. Energy <br />value is fair and protein is poor. <br />Meadow fescue is very desirable for its soil stabilizing attributes. It also is of bene- <br />fit to wildlife and domestic livestock. This species is present and compatible with the other <br />species of plants and animals in the area. It is not noxious, nor poisonous by itself. <br />(•) See Hard fescue for poisonous factor. <br />MOUNTAIN BROME: BROMUS MARGINATUS NEES. <br />This perennial native bunch grass grows beat in dry-moist sites within an eleva- <br />tion range of 5,000 to 10,100 feet in Colorado. It is not poisonous to livestock. Mountain <br />brome is recognized as being a potential colonizer in terms of weediness. (See definitions <br />of weediness). This grass grows good in sandy loam and loam, and fair in clay loam. It <br />does best on gentle to moderate slopes. Erosion control potential for this plant is medium. <br />Establishment requirements are low and both the short term and long term revegetation <br />• potential ratings are medium.
