• OVERVIEW
Appendix 4.4-B contains descriptions of the plant species that may be used in
revegetating the disturbed lands at the Edna Mine. The evaluations of the species were
derived for the most part from the Western Energy Land Use Team's ("WELUT") Plant
Information Network ("PIN") data base and mine Bite experience with many of the species
in question. This appendix contains a listing of definitions for the various attributes used
in PIN, followed by descriptions of the species. The plant species descriptions are grouped
into habits, including Grasses. Forbs and T4ees and Shrubs.
A. Weedy - A plant considered undesirable or troublesome, especially one that is growing
where it is not wanted. Plants are scored in P.I.N. only once in the following order: 1.
Noxious, 2. Economic, 3. Colonizing and 4. Non-weedy.
1. Noxious - A plant which is listed on official noxious weed seed lists of Colorado,
Montana, North Dakota or Wyoming.
• 2. Economic - A plant whose growth and reproduction causes economic loss.
3. Colonizine - A plant which has attributes enabling it to become easily established
in areas of environmental disturbance or where it is not wanted.
4. Non-weedy - Not a weed.
B. Poisonous -Livestock -Plants that contain or produce, under natural conditions, phys-
. iologically active or toxic substances in sufficient amounts to cause harmful effects in
livestock, or produce mechanically injurious plant parts.
Plants are included in only one category in the following order of description prece-
dence.
1. ~gjp= - A plant that typically produces substances of high toxicity, may be highly or
moderately palatable, and is usually available in its range. This category in-
cludes plants that often accumulate selenium or molybdenum or nitrates to toxic
levels. Plants in this category cause the majority of livestock losses.
2. apt - A plant that produces substances of low toxicity and/or rarely produces
substances of high toxicity, and/or has low palatability, and/or is usually unavail-
able or rare in its range. This category includes plants that are secondary sele-
• nium or molybdenum accumulators. It should be noted that also included in this
category are legumes, crop plants and other species of significant economic value
4.4-B-I
