-z-

diameter of more than six (6) inches. This fill material shall be ob-
tained from areas shown on the plans.
On-site materials classifying as CL, CH, SC, and SM are acceptable.
Other on-site materials and all off-site materials must be approved by
the Soils Engineer prior to hauling and placement. Concrete, asphalt,
organic matter and other deleterious materials will not be approved.
Highly pervious materials should be placed in the outer zones of the
embankment with more impervious soils used to construct the central por-
tions of the embankment.
7. MOISTURE CONTENT
The fill material shall be moisture treated to within 2± percent of
optimum moisture content as determined from laboratory compaction tests.
Sufficient laboratory compaction tests will be made to determine the
optimum moisture content for the various additional soils encountered
in the borrow area.
The Contractor may be required to add the necessary moisture to the
fill material in the excavation, if in the opinion of the Soils Engineer
it is not possible to obtain uniform moisture content by adding water on
• the fill surface. The Contractor may be required to rake or disk the
fill to provide uniform moisture content of fill material.
The application of water to the embankment materials shall be made
with any type of watering equipment approved by the Soils Engineer, which
will give the desired results. Water jets from the spreader shall not be
directed at the embankment material with such force that the fill materials
are washed out.
Should too much water be added to any part of the embankment, such
that the material is too wet to permit the securing of the desired compac-
tion, the rolling and all work on that section of the embankment shall be
delayed until the material has dried to the required moisture content.
The Contractor will be permitted to rework such wet material in an approved
manner to hasten its drying.
8. COMPACTION OF FILL AREAS
The selected fill material shall be placed in mixed and evenly spread
approximately horizontal layers. After each fill layer has been placed,
it shall be uniformly compacted to not less than the specified percentage
of maximum density. Clay soils shall be compacted to at least 95 percent
of the maximum dry density as determined using ASTM D 698 (standard Proctor).
At the option of the Soils Engineer, soils classifying as SM or SC may
•
