overly tall or dense. Cattail marshes and wetland communities dominated by reed
canary grass do not provide suitable habitat for this species. One species commonly
associated evith Ute Ladies Tresses Orchid (Table 4) was observed at the Duckworth site.
This species [red top (Agrostis stolonifern)] is widespread and occurs in a variety of
wetland and other situations. Its presence is not necessarily suggestive that appropriate
habitat for Ute Ladies Tresses Orchid is present on the site.
Colorado Butterfl~Plant. No Colorado Butterfly Plant individuals were
found within the wetlands on the site (Table 5). Suitable habitat for this species consists
of subirrigated, alluvial soIls on level or slightly sloping floodplains and drainage
bottoms. Usually these environments in intermediate in moisture. One species
commonly associated with Colorado Butterfly Plant was observed at the Duckworth
site. This species [red top (Agrostis stolonifera)] is widespread and occurs in a variety of
wetland and other situations. While Colorado Butterfly Plant is know to occur in Weld
County, all of the known populations are downstream from the Duckworth Property.
Evaluation of Turisdictional Status of Wetlands. In all, 3.25 acres of wetlands
were delineated on the Duckworth Property (Table 1). Most of the wetland areas occur
on low azeas along Idaho Creek (2.88 acres). The remaining 0.37 acres occur in
association with irrigation ditches, ditch laterals and a stock pond. All of the wetland
areas were evaluated relative to their jurisdictional status (Table 6). Based on this
evaluation, the 0.37 acres of wetlands associated with irrigation ditches, ditch laterals
and the stock pond were determined to be non-jurisdictional (because they are isolated
wetlands). For wetlands along Idaho Creek, 2.06 acres were judged to be jurisdictional
(because they are adjacent and connected with Idaho Creek) and 0.82 acres were judged
to be non-jurisdictional (because even though they are adjacent to wetlands along Idaho
Creek, they are supported by irrigation retum flows).
Summary
Wetlands on the Duckworth Property consist mostly of riparian wet meadows.
These wetlands occur in association with existing irrigation ditches excavated in upland
azeas, stream channels and irrigation return flow sites. Human activity on the site has
altered the original hydrological features of the site.
The wetland habitats present on the site are mostly unsuitable for Ute Ladies
Tresses Orchid. No orchids were found in any of the wetland areas. Additionally, no
Colorado Butterfly plant individuals were observed.
Literature Cited
Department of the Army. 1987.
