Your letters described the
condition of the ponds prior to the rain events and attached were temperature charts that indicated rainfall prior to the
sampling events. On March 30 and 31, 1998 approximately 0.53 inches of precipitation was recorded and on May 6,
1998 approximately 0.03 inches of precipitation was recorded at Trapper. Your sediment ponds are designed to Veat
and contain a 10-year24-hour precipitation event. Due to the time of year and prior snowmett events, the outfalls
referenced above were determined to have exceeded the "60°.6 full" clean out threshold for 1998. The self-monRortng
data you provided on your Discharge Monitoring Report is shown below:
Reported Permit
Period Outfall Parameter Resulfs Conditions
2098 002A TSS (mg/I) 40 (30 day avg) 35 (30 day avg)
2098 011A TSS (mg/I) 46 (30 day avg) 35 (30 day avg)
2098 017A TSS (mg/I) 96 (30 day avg) 35 (30 day avg)
2098 017A TSS (mgA) 96 (daily mx) 70 (daily mx)
2098 017A Iron, Total (mg/I) 5.0 (30 day avg) 3.0 (30 day avg)
Trapper Mining has shown that discharge occurred within 48 hours after measurable precipitation and that discharge
from the various outtalls was beyond your control. Therefore, we believe that Trapper Mining Company qualifies for
the less than or equal to a 10-year24-hour precipitation alternate limit, thus waiving TSS and Total Iron limits.
If you have any further questions regarding this matter, please contact me at (303) 692-3603
Si ce ly,
Car a J.
