<br />grasses) should be limited to mechanical clipping or shredding prior <br />to grass seed set, or to herbicidal application of 1-2 lbs. AI/Ac of <br />2,4-D low volatile ester or amine after the S-leaf growth stage on <br />grasses. Contact the SCS office for more specific weed control <br />recommendations. <br />Areas which have been denuded or eroded down to subsoil layers or <br />exposed rock should definitely be topsoiled, preferably to at least a <br />depth of 4-6 inches. This will greatly enhance the probability of <br />seeding establishment, vigor and success. The area should be <br />scarified where possible to permit better bonding between the applied <br />topsoil and the underlying soil base material, After scarification, <br />the topsoil should be uniformly spread over the area. <br />c) A soil test should be performed to determine the proper <br />fertilizer requirement in both types and amounts. In lieu of a soil <br />test, it is recommended to fertilize the seeded area with 40 pounds <br />per acre of available, elemental nitrogen and 20 pounds per acre of <br />phosphate. If phosporous is the primary nutrient need, the <br />fertilizer should be incorporated into the top 2-3 inches of soil <br />using a light disk or harrow implement prior to grass seeding. <br />Fertilizer should preferably be first applied well into the growing <br />season after seedling emergence and early growth, particularly when <br />applying nitrogen as tfie primary nutrient, <br />d) Prior to topsoil spreading, any banks or other slopes <br />of moderate or greater degree should be worked within reason to <br />provide as minimal a slope as possible, preferably 3:1 or less. If <br />. steeper slopes must be vegetated, erosion control measures such as <br />small, series terraces or benches, contour ditches or furrows, or <br />other similar structures will be necessary to prevent surface erosion <br />and sloughing during seeding establishment. If benches are necessary <br />for soil and slope stability, bench height above the next lower bench <br />shall not exceed 20 vertical feet. Rough areas should be smoothed to <br />permit easier seeding and mulching. All tillage, seeding and <br />crimping operations should be performed across the slope <i.e. on <br />contour where possible). <br />e) All roads and other similarly disturbed areas should be <br />graded or reworked so as to blend into or approximate the surrounding <br />landscape as closely as possible. Any man-made ditches or other <br />drainages should be filled or structured such that water erosion will <br />be prevented or minimized, and surface water runoff is properly <br />channeled at non-erosive slopes to non-erosive outlets. <br />Recommendations for erosion control structures and proper channel <br />grades will be provided upon request by the SCS. <br />4) Seeding mixture recommendations are provided for seeding to <br />be done after project completion as final reclamation. The seed <br />mixture, for its intended purpose, is felt to best represent an <br />optimum combination of factors including ease of establishment, soil <br />holding and stability characteristics, wildlife forage value, low <br />maintenance during and after establishment, commercial availability <br />in the local or regional area, and tolerance of warm, low-moisture <br />conditions, Please refer to form_CO_ECS=5s_Part_I_lattached), for <br />recommended species and seeding rates. <br />
