Army Corps of
Regulatory Unit 4
402 Raod Ave., Room
Grand Junction, CU
Dear Ms. Nall
Engineers
142
81501-2563
In response to your request for historical information
about the berms in the Uncompahgre River near the proposed ZMb::
Gravel Operation in Duray County, the following was learned:
In the mid-1950's berms were constructed along the
west bank of the river by ^uray County to protect the
Dalpaz Ranch, Boyd Ranch R< Colo.State Hwy.23 from
damage due to flooding.
Through the 1960's, 1970's and early 1980's, the
berms and the channel of the river were dazed by
Duray County and local property owners to protect the
Idlewild Subdivision, KDA Campground, Sunshine Valley
Ranch/Campground, and other property owners from
flooding and high water.
Since the early to mid-1980's, there has been no
channeling ^f the river or additional berms
constructed, only the patching of existing berms by
pushing material into "breaks" as indicated on the
photograph included in the 404 Permit application.
The large racks west of the Webb residence and the
berms between the Webb property and the active
channel were in place in 1969, when Webb purchased
the property from bayd.
both >,n 1989 and 1990, private property owners
paLcl-ied breaks in ttae berms to avoid possible
flooding of their properties.
The above information was acquired from Duray County
personnel, Duray County Commissioners and local property
owners. If there are further questions that need to be
addressed, please contact me.
Sy~r~ er a 1,,+~ ,
Robert A. Larson
