<br />This series occurs in map unit SOA. It was sampled in composite <br />sample numbers 254/266. Average lift 1 thickness is U inches, averaye <br />litt 2 thickness is 6U+ inches, for an averaye total salvayable <br />thickness for the series of 6U+ inches. <br />'L .1.11 Silas Loam <br />Tnis soil is a very deep, well drained, moderately permeable soil <br />formed in alluvium derived from shale and sandstone. It occurs on <br />valley bottom swales on slopes of 2 to 3U percent. The native <br />vegetation is mixed grasses, big sage and fortis. The available water <br />holding capacity is high. <br />In a typical profile, the surface layer is very dark brown to <br />black, loam about 35 inches thick. The substratum is very dark gray <br />to very dark yellowish brown, gravelly loam, cobbly loam or clay loam <br />about 25 inches thick or more. Depth to bedrock is yreater than 6U <br />inches. The series is within the fine-loamy, mixed family of Cumulic <br />Cryoborolls. <br />The moliic epipedon ranges from 16 to 96 inches thick, but <br />averages 49 inches. The Silas loam is a very good source of <br />topsoiliny material. The very thick mollic epipedon is good for lift <br />1. The material below the epipedon is good for lift 2. Its Chemical <br />characteristics were determined suitable to a depth of 71 inches. A <br />groundwater table may be encountered at depth at certain times and in <br />places the soil may be difficult to salvage due to wetness. <br />This series occurs in map units SA, SUA and SBC. It was sampled <br />in typical pedon number 7 and in composite sample numbers 47/125. <br />.Average lift 1 thickness is 49 inches, average lift 2 thickness is 11+ <br />inches, for an averaye total salvayable thickness for the series of <br />60+ inches. <br />2.1.12 Silas Var. Loam <br />This soil is a very deep, moderately well drained, moderately <br />permeable soil formed in alluvium derived from shale and sandstone. <br />It occurs on va lley bottoms on slopes of 3 to 2U percent. The native <br />vegetation is mixed grasses and fortis. The available water holding <br />capacity is nigh. <br />Ih a typical profile, the surface layer is very darK brown, Clay. <br />loam or loam about 18 inches thick. The subsoil is mottled dark <br />Drown, clay loam or fine sandy loam about 19 inches thicK. Tne <br />substratum is black, mottled clay loam about 23 inches thick. Depth <br />to bedrock is yreater than 6U inches. The series is within the <br />fine-loamy, mixed family of Cumulic Haploborolls. <br />. Tne Silas variant has. a buried low chroma horizon at 33 to 37 <br />inches. The profile is less well drained than the Silas, The mOllic <br />epipedon is a good source of lift 1 material. The buried low chroma <br />horizon is suitable for lift 2. A groundwater table may be <br />13 <br />
