<br />This series occurs in map unit N8. It was sampled in typical <br />pedon number 8 and in composite sample numbers 290/250. Averaye lift <br />1 tnickness is U inches, average lift 2 thickness is 38 inches, for an <br />average total salvayable thickness for the series of 38 inches. <br />2.1.7 Northwater Loain <br />This soil is a deep, well drained, moderately permeable soil <br />formed in residuum and colluvium derived from sandstone and hard <br />shale. It occurs on steep. mountain sideslopes on slopes of 20 to 65 <br />percent. The native vegetation is aspen, serviceberry and oakbrush. <br />The available water holding capacity is moderate to high. <br />In a typical profile, the surface layer is black loam, clay loam, <br />or cobbly loam about 25 inches thick. The subsoil is very dark brown <br />to very dark yellowis'rr brown, channery to very cobbly loam, sandy clay <br />loam or sandy clay about 30 inches thick. The substratum is vari- <br />colored, very channery loam about 5 inches thicK. Depth to bedrock is <br />4U to 6U inches. The series is within the loamy-skeletal; mixed <br />family of Cryic Pachic Paleborolls. <br />Channers and cobbles exceed 35 percent by volume in the subsoil. <br />The thickness of the mollic epipedon averages 'L5 inches. The thicK <br />rnollic epipedon is a good source of lift 1 material. Tne subsoils may <br />oe suitable for lift 2 but contain a large percent of cobbles. In <br />places the subsoif may be too cobbly for sa{vaye. <br />This series occurs in map units NBD, NC, and ND. It was sampled <br />in typical pedon .number 5 and in composite sample numbers 35/77 and <br />135/165. Averaye lift 1 thickness is '25 inches, average lift 2 <br />thickness is 3U inches, for an average total salvayable thickness for <br />the series of 55 inches. <br />2.1.8 Redthayne channery Loam <br />i. <br />1"his soil is a deep td very deep, well drained, moderately <br />permeable soil formed in colluvium derived from baKed sandstone and <br />shale. It occurs on red knobs and mountain sideslopes on slopes of 3 <br />io 7U percent. The native vegetation is big sage, mixeU grasses and <br />fortis. The available water holding capacity is moderate. <br />In a typical profile, the surface layer is dark reddisrr brown, <br />gravelly to very channery loam, clay loam, or sandy loam about 11 <br />inches thick. Tne substratum is dark red, very gravelly to very <br />channery loans or clay loam about 49 inches thick or more. Depth to <br />bedrock is 6U or more inches. Tne series is in the loamy-skeletal, <br />mixed family of Aridic Haploborolls. <br />Coarse fragments exceed 35 percent by volume in the subsoil. The <br />mollic epipedon is a fair source of lift .l material. The subsoil is <br />suitable for lift 2, but is marginal due to channery. <br />11 <br />
