Southficld Minc <br />Minor ReHSion Request Na. 10 -South Fan Installation • S <br />Cultural and Historic Resources (2.04.4) <br />The Monarch No. 4 Mine is identified as a possible historical site evaluated <br />by the Colorado Historical Society in Exhibit 6, Cultural and Historic <br />Resource Information, of the EFCI permit document. This documentation <br />indicates that the evaluation resulted in a determination that the site is not <br />eligible for listing. Also refer to Section 2.04.3 of the EFCI permit <br />application document (Volume 11. <br />Geology (2.04.6) <br />Geology of the area to be effected by the proposed fan installation is <br />consistent with surrounding areas within the EFCI permit area. Surficial <br />• materials consist of geologically recent interbedded outwash deposits of <br />soil, sand, silt and conglomerates. The site is located near the base of a <br />small intermittent drainage which has cut through the outwash materials <br />exposing the Vermejo formation on the valley sides. The existing mine <br />portals are in the Red Arrow coal seam. The Red Arrow seam is part of the <br />Vermejo formation which consists predominantly of sandstones and fine- <br />grained siltstones. <br />The dominant structural features in this area are the Wet Mountain Fault <br />and adjacent Chandler Syncline. The synclinal axis is located approximately <br />3,000 feet southwest of the proposed site and the fault is an additional <br />4,500 feet to the southwest. This is no history or evidence of any <br />geologically recent movement along the fault. <br />While some surficial sloughing of exposed material from the existing portal <br />• bench has occurred, there is no evidence of any significant rock mass <br />failure.
