(A1CC), West Elk Mine, Request for Authorization to
Construct a Drill Pad and Drill Gob /Vent Degas Borehole No. 14-04.
Dear Ms. Spear:
• MCC is submitting this request for authorization to construct a pad and drill a gob vent degas borehole
from a new location. The location is between approved pads SOM-124 and RAV-10, and is necessary
to drill Borehole No. 14-04 in a neaz vertical direction rather than previous angled boreholes at RAV-
]0.
Referencing the enclosed map and previously submitted documents, MCC is proposing to construct the
pad and align Borehole No. 14-04 in a more vertical position above the intended target area in the
mine. The anticipated size of the drill pad (120' x 180') will be field-fitted due to the limiting
topography of the steep valley. Because only one borehole will be drilled from this location and the
steep topography, it is thought that smaller mudpits will need to be constructed. The water will be
supplied for the drilling by flexible hose laid on the ground. The existing ATV road will be improved
and re-aligned to adequately access the drilling azea.
If this borehole is successful, MCC may not need to drill a borehole from the SOM-124 pad location.
The cultural and biological resource information for this new location is attached for your review. A
copy of the cultural resource information was forwazded to Ms. Sally Crum of the USFS Collbran
Ranger District by our consultant (Greystone).
Please notify me if you have questions regazding this request for authorization to construct the pad and
approval for the gob vent degas Borehole No.14-04.
• Sincer ly,
Henry A. Barbe
Environmental Engineer
