2004 Geologic Hazard Field Observations
South of Divide Minino Area

10.0 POTENTIAL IMPACTS OF SUBSIDENCE AND MINE-INDUCED SEISMIC
ACTIVITY ON LANDSLIDES AND ROCKFALLS
After conducting annual subsidence observations for the last nine yeazs in the West Ells mining
area, the primary conclusion regarding the effects of longwall mining beneath landslides on
Jumbo Mountain and the Apache Rocks and Box Canyon mining azeas, is that landslide
movement occurs in response to moisture and ground saturation, and is not noticeably affected
by subsidence or any seismic activity caused by longwall mining beneath, or near, the slides.
10.1 Landslides
In general, as described in Section 8, there aze four landslides or landslide azeas located in the
south of Divide mining area (Map 1) (there may be more small, local slides which are not yet
mapped):
1. The large landslide is located south of Minnesota Reservoir above the northern part of
projected longwall pane19, in the N% of Section 32, Township 13 South, Range 90 West.
Overburden depth to the E Seam ranges from 500 to 550 feet. The average slope of the
slide is approximately 20 percent. The landslide contains fewer recent cracks and scarps
in the upper part and more depressions and bulges in the lower part than were present in
the eazly 1960s (based on stereographic observations of image data from July 1963 and
July 2004 aerial photographs).
2. Landslide located near the north shore of Minnesota Reservoir in the SW'/e of Section 29.
This slide, which showed renewed movement in the 1990s, is located on the border
between the Apache Rocks and South of Divide mining azeas.
3. Landslide area located about one mile west of Minnesota Reservoir on the Dry Fork road
(outside of any planned mining) in the approximate center of Section 31, Township 13
South, Range 90 West. Two small landslides aze also located in the same general area to
the southeast in the SE'/4 of Section 31 and the SW'/< of Section 32.
•
831-032.621
November 2004
Wright Water Engineers, Inc.
Page 39
