1.0 INTRODUCTION
• 1.01 Description of the Area
This report is a supplement to a previous report (Amuedo and Ivey, Inc., 1994);
also see Attachment 13-6 in the permit package. This earlier report was prepared before
coal production began at the Yoast Mine. A brief discussion of the area from the earlier
report is (p. l )
`"fhe proposed Yoast mine is located mainly in secs. 17, and 19, and in smaller parts of
secs. 8, 20, 29 and 30, T.SN., R.87W. in Routt County, Colorado. The haul-road
alignment originates in the north-central part of sec. 28, and passes southwestward and
southward through secs. 29 and 32, T.6N., R87W. and through secs. 5 and 8, T.SN.,
R.87W."
A more detailed discussion of the area is given in the report.
1.02 Purpose and Scope of Investigation
The following background comments were made to the writer by Mr. Michael G.
Altavilla regarding the purpose and scope of the work to be done for the present project.
These comments were based on discussions at an adequacy meeting held on June 25,
1999, between Seneca Coal Company (hereafter referred to as SCC) and the Colorado
Department of Minerals and Geology (hereafter referred to as DMG). This meeting was
not attended by the writer.
"During the adequacy review of PR-Ol, the Colorado Division of Minerals and
Geology (DMG) raised concerns regarding potential landslides or unstable areas within
the southern area of the Yoast Mine. This geologic mapping (Exhibit 6-l, Site Specific
Geology) was originally done by Bruce Stover, CMLRD, December 1994, after the
original investigation A&I conducted, through the photogeologic interpretation of aerial
photographs. In the PAP, it was agreed that the areas would be field examined prior to
mining or facilities construction. SCC and Montgomery Watson conducted a field
investigation in May 1999 and provided a report and photo documentation to the DMG.
Based on the June 23, 1999 adequacy review of TR-I 1, the DMG expressed concerns on
the contents of this report." (Michael G. Altavilla, personal communication, July 19,
. 1999)
